README file for SSEYO Koan Web, Koan Plugin and Koan Active X
8th July 1997
=============================================================================
Thank you for using this SSEYO Koan product !
Depending on how you downloaded this product, the first thing you will probably
need to do is to run one of the self extracting files, identified below.
Choose 16 bit versions for Windows 3.1 and 32 bit versions for Windows 95 or
Windows NT 4.
The self extracting .EXE files are identifiable as follows:
KWS20_32.EXE - Koan Web Silver V2 32-bit
KWG20_32.EXE - Koan Web Gold V2 32-bit
KWP20_32.EXE - Koan Web Platinum V2 32-bit
KWS20_16.EXE - Koan Web Silver V2 16-bit
KWG20_16.EXE - Koan Web Gold V2 16-bit
KWP20_16.EXE - Koan Web Platinum V2 16-bit
KNP3LIVE.EXE - Koan Live Connect Plugin V3 for 32-bit Netscape Navigator V3 and later only
KNP1032.EXE - Koan Plugin V1 for 32-bit Microsoft Internet Explorer V3 and later
KNP1016.EXE - Koan Plugin V1 for 16-bit Netscape V2, V3 or later
KOANAX20.EXE - Koan Active X V2 (32-bit only, for Microsoft Internet Explorer V3 and later)
Note that all the above files contain the latest V2 SSEYO Koan Music Engine.
KGIFTBOX.EXE - 8 Freely provided Koan files for you to use (run to
self-extract the files)
Each of the .EXE files when run will self-extract to a give a number
of files and (usually) a setup program.
Note : if you have decided to download and install the Koan Plug-in, then
please make sure that you choose the correct Plug-in to download ! :
If you have a 32-bit web browser for Win 95, then
then
if you have Netscape Navigator V3 or later, then
Choose KNP3LIVE.EXE
else, if you have Microsoft Internet Explorer V3 or later, then
Choose KNP1032.EXE
else if you have Netscape Navigator V2 or earlier, then
Choose KNP1032.EXE
otherwise :
Sorry, there is no suitable Plug-in !
else, if you have a 16-bit web browser for Win 3.1, then
If you have Netscape Navigator V2, V3 or later, then
Choose KNP1016.EXE
otherwise :
Sorry, there is no suitable Plug-in !
=============================================================================
To install the software ...
=============================================================================
1. Move the downloaded .EXE file, into a temporary directory.
Win 95 :
Use Explorer to create a temporary directory on your
C: drive, called "C:\KOANTEMP". Move the downloaded
EXE files into this directory.
Win 3.1 or later :
Use File Manager to create a temporary directory on your
C: drive, called "C:\KOANTEMP". Move the downloaded
EXE files into this directory.
Please ensure that the directory is empty, with the exception of the
Koan .EXE file !
2. Run the downloaded executable to extract the contents of the file - for
example :
Windows :
Double-click on the file
DOS :
CD C:\KOANTEMP
KNP1032.EXE
A number of additional files will then appear within the temporary
directory.
3. If a SETUP16.EXE or SETUP32.EXE or SETUP.EXE program has appeared in
the temporary directory, then select and run this file, and follow the
instructions that appear on screen to complete your installation.
NOTE : YOU ARE STRONGLY RECOMMENDED TO CLOSE YOUR WEB BROWSER AND ANY
SSEYO KOAN APPLICATIONS YOU MAY BE RUNNING, BEFORE RUNNING THE SETUP
PROGRAM !
For further information, please refer to the read-me file
(e.g. READKNPW.TXT) which comes with each of the above installations (and
also the license and online help file with Koan Web).
Note that if you are installing the Plug-in, then you will be prompted
to identify your Web Browser program.
If your web browser is Netscape Navigator, then the program to specify is
called NETSCAPE.EXE, and you will typically find this in
"C:\Program Files\Netscape\Navigator\Program\Netscape.exe"
or
"C:\PROGRA~1\NETSCAPE\NAVIG~1\PROGRAM\NETSCAPE.EXE"
If you have Microsoft Internet Explorer, then the program to specify is
called IEXPLORE.EXE, and you will typically find this in :
or
"C:\Microsoft Internet\IEXPLORE.EXE"
or
"C:\MICROS~1\IEXPLORE.EXE"
or
"C:\Program Files\PLUS!\Microsoft Internet\IEXPLORE.EXE"
or
"C:\PROGRA~1\PLUS!\MICROS~1\IEXPLORE.EXE"
Each software product has its own software license - please read and agree
to the terms of the Software License.
Other .EXE files (such as KGIFTBOX.EXE) will simply self-extract a number
of Koan pieces (and possibly albums) without any setup program. Just move
these to wherever you wish to keep them, and open and play these files
directly, using either your copy of Koan Web, or your copy of the Koan
Plug-in.
4. Once you have installed the SSEYO Koan software, remove the temporary
files from your temporary directory (C:\KOANTEMP), using
either File Manager or Microsoft Explorer.
5. Once you have installed the SSEYO Koan software, you may now either :
If you have installed Koan Plug-in:
* you can surf the SSEYO Koan Web site (try :
http://www.sseyo.com/indexnew.html) and have Koan music played
in the background.
* You can also open SSEYO Koan Files (*.skp, *.skd, *.skt, *.skm)
straight from your hard disk, by using either Netscape Navigator's
File Open menu and selecting the appropriate file type, or by
using Microsoft Internet Explorer's File Open menu and then
pressing the Browse button to search for the SSEYO Koan file of Interest.
Use your mouse to click on the Koan icon that is displayed, and the file
will play automatically !
To quickly add beautiful Koan Music to your web page, just copy the following
into the body of your web page :
<EMBED SRC="http://www.sseyo.com/images/mythous2.skp" Height=32 width=32 AUTOSTART=true>
If you have installed Koan Web, you can surf the Koan Web site
and select files to download and play directly through Koan Web
(try : http://www.sseyo.com/demos.html)
Now that you have tried Koan Web or Koan Plug-in, why not download
Koan X from our website, or Koan Pro demo ?
=============================================================================
Plug-in Problems ?
=============================================================================
1. Double-check that you have installed the correct Plug-in version to match
your version of Netscape or Microsoft Internet Explorer - we have separate
installs for Netscape 2 / Microsoft Internet Explorer V3, Netscape V3
Beta4, and Netscape V3 Betas 5/6/7 and later, and 16-32 bit !
2. If the Plug-in is installed properly, and if you are using Netscape
Navigator, you should be able to see it reported if you select
"Help | About Plug-in" from the Netscape menu. If it is not there, then
you have either got the wrong version installed, or your file somehow is
corrupted - in which case, try downloading it again, and re-installing.
You should see something like the following displayed :
SSEYO(R) Koan(R) Music Plug-in
File name: C:\NS30\PROGRAM\plugins\npkoan32.dll
SSEYO « Koan« Music Plug-In
Mime Type Description Suffixes Enabled
application/x-koan SSEYO Koan Files skp, skd, skt, skm Yes
If this is not there, then either you have not installed the plugin
correctly, or you have installed the wrong version (you must choose either
16- or 32-bit, and must select the appropriate version to match your
release of Netscape).
Also, for the 32-bit version, you should be able to find SKME1_32.DLL in
your c:\windows directory (for the 16-bit version, you should find
SKME1.DLL in your c:\windows directory).
=============================================================================
"Could not load the plug-in ..."
=============================================================================
If you get the following message, and you are using Netscape Navigator 3.0
for Windows 95 / Windows NT 4, then you have probably downloaded the wrong
Plug-in !
"Could not load the plug-in 'SSEYO(R) KOAN(R) music
plug-in for the mime type Application/x-koan.
Make sure enough memory is available and that the
plug-in is installed correctly."
Note that this is the by far the most common problem reported with the Koan
Plug-ins ... so you are not alone ! :)
It is very easy to solve this problem. Simply follow the following steps :
1. Delete from your browser's "plugins" directory any of the following
files that might be present :
NPKOAN16.DLL
NPKOAN32.DLL
NPKOAN.ZIP
2. Use Explorer to create a temporary directory (folder) on your C:
drive, called "C:\KOANTEMP".
3. Download the KNP1032.EXE file from our website (or which ever one matches
your browser), into the C:\KOANTEMP directory that you have just created !
4. Using Explorer, double-click on the KNP1032.EXE file that is now in
your c:\KOANTEMP directory. This will extract the contents of the
file, to create a number of temporary files, including SETUP32.EXE.
You must now run this appropriate setup program, by double-clicking on
SETUP32.EXE.
5. You will be prompted to identify your Web Browser program. The program
to specify is called NETSCAPE.EXE, and you will typically find this in
"C:\PROGRA~1\NETSCAPE\NAVIG~1\PROGRAM\NETSCAPE.EXE"
6. Once you have installed the SSEYO Koan software, remove the temporary
files from your temporary directory (C:\KOANTEMP), using Microsoft
Explorer. That's it !
=============================================================================
No Sound ?
=============================================================================
If you are getting no sound output from your SSEYO Koan product, please
check the following :
1. Check that you have a valid MIDI Output device specified (check : the
Setup Options dialog, available through your SSEYO Koan product's Menu).
SSEYO Koan will default to use the Midi Mapper, which may not have been
specified properly on your machine - in which case, you can either set-up
the Midi Mapper properly, or change the Midi Output device to instead be the
direct driver for your soundcard.
(Note : for Win 95 users, the MIDI mapper is the default instrument, which
is defined through Control Panel / Multimedia / MIDI ... the instrument
you specify here, is that selected when you specify "MIDI Mapper" as your
Koan Midi Output Device.)
2. Check that you have at least 1 MIDI device available on your system ! If you
have none (very rare), then you must either buy a new soundcard which
supports MIDI, or get hold of some of the new software-only synth drivers,
such as the Yamaha SoftSynth.
3. Check that you have not specified "SB16 Midi Out" or some other device by
mistake, without having an external sound source connected !
4. Check that you have not set the SSEYO Koan master volume level to 0 or very
low.
5. Make sure that you have not used Koan Web to mute your SSEYO Koan output.
6. Check that your soundcard's master Midi output level has not been set to 0
or very low, or muted altogether.
7. If individual MIDI lines are not responding in Koan Pro, then ensure that
you have not set the Fixed Volume Input Line to the wrong value (try setting
it to "<None>" if you encounter this problem).
8. If you have an SB16 / OPL-3 soundcard, ensure that you have not set the
Koan ADSR option in the Setup Options Dialog, to be checked on by mistake.
=============================================================================
If nothing else seems to work ...
=============================================================================
If you've tried everything, and get no output at all ... check all the
following !
1. Check that you have sufficient memory, and check that virtual memory is
enabled !
2. Close down all Koan applications.
Just in case one of your .ini files has become corrupted, delete the
following files from your c:\windows directory, where they exist :
sseyo.ini
koan*.ini
kplus*.ini
kweb*.ini
kpro*.ini
koanpro.ini
3. Re-start your Koan product, and using the Setup Options dialog, set your
device driver to be a direct driver liek "SB AWE32 Midi Synth", if this is
available. Click OK. Open and play a piece. Stop the piece. Close your
Koan product. If this works, then your Midi Mapper is broken, but your
system is now useable. Otherwise, try step 3.
4. As a desperate measure, try yet another Midi output device. If one of
the other device drivers clears the problem, then your soundcard is
mis-behaving : call your technical support contact for advice. Otherwise,
if *none* of the midi devices clear the problem, then you are probably
having problems with your memory manager ...
=============================================================================
Plug-in Tips
=============================================================================
There is a fair amount of functionality that you can access from the Plug-in,
by using the Right-hand mouse button to click on the Koan icon. This causes
a pop-up menu to be displayed, from which you can select the option you want.
When surfing, if you find a SSEYO Koan Plug-in playing piece that you really
like, and if you have downloaded and installed Koan Web, then all you have to
do is select "Launch Koan Web" from the pop-up menu that you get when you
click the right-hand mouse button on the Plug-in. This piece will then stay
with you while you browse through the web !
=============================================================================
MIME Types and Playing Koan Files over the WWW
=============================================================================
Note that you may use either Koan Web as a Web Helper application. To use Koan
Web to play Koan files (e.g. from http://www.sseyo.com/demo.html) using your
Web Browser (e.g. Mosaic / Netscape Navigator / Microsoft Internet Explorer),
you need to specify the Koan MIME type/subtype (which is application/x-koan)
and has file extensions (.skp, .skd, .skt, .skm) against our Koan Web program
(either kweb*.exe or kw*32.exe), such that transfer of a file with one of
these extensions will result in the Koan file being played automatically by
the Koan Web program.
The following is the syntax to embed a Koan file in your web page, to be played
by a Plug-in :
<EMBED SRC="images/mythous2.skp" Height=32 width=32 AUTOSTART=true>
or
<EMBED SRC="http://www.sseyo.com/images/mythous2.skp" Height=32 width=32 AUTOSTART=true>
or
<EMBED SRC="http://www.sseyo.com/images/mythous2.skp" Height=32 width=32 AUTOSTART=false>
To embed a plain vanilla hot-link to a Koan file, just do :
Click on me with Koan Web <a href="images/mythous2.skp">MYTHOUS2.SKP</A> to download me !
or
Click on me with Koan Web <a href="http://www.sseyo.com/images/mythous2.skp">MYTHOUS2.SKP</A> to download me !
Note that CompuServe do not yet recognise our MIME type, which is documented on
our web pages. Currently, if you click on a Koan file which is hosted by
CompuServe web page, this results in the (binary) Koan file getting transferred
from the Compuserve web server as a (text) file, resulting in loss of data.
Note if you like, you can use Koan Web to play Midi files, our Plug-in no longer
supports the facility to play Midi files, to prevent conflict with other midi
player Plug-in.
> Hi, I really want to try out your great-sounding Koan software and
> music. I've downloaded and installed your 32-bit plug-in for my Netscape
> Navigator version 3.0b5a browser. I also know a lot about HTML code but
> no matter what I tried I couldn't embed a Koan file on my Web pages so
> that Koan music would play when they're accessed.
If the problem occurs when you are trying to play Koan files (e.g.
.skp/.skd/.skt/.skm), such as come in our Koan Gift Box file from our web
site, then your problem will be due to your web service provider not yet
having defined our Koan MIME types - full details of how to do this on our
web site ! (It is a piece of cake for them to do, and would take them
literally only 1 or 2 minutes - see http://www.sseyo.com/mime.html)
=============================================================================
Setting up SSEYO Koan Web as a Helper Application for your Web Browser
=============================================================================
Either :
A) Download a Koan file and set up SSEYO Koan Web as a
helper application on the fly
1. Click on a "hotlinked" Koan file to download it.
2. You will get a message saying that it is an Unknown
file type and asking you if you want to set up a
helper application/pick an application.
3. Click Yes or Pick Application and select SSEYO Koan Web
(it will be where you installed it, most likely the
KOANWEB directory) as your external viewer.
or :
B) Setup SSEYO Koan Web as a helper application in advance
For Microsoft Internet Explorer, you can use the
Explore | Options dialog to associate SSEYO Koan file
extensions (SKP, SKD, SKT, MID) with the SSEYO Koan Web
program.
For Netscape Navigator:
1. Select Options|Preferences|Helpers (pre V2) or
Options|General Preferences |Helpers (V2 or later).
2. Add a new Helper application with MIME type
application, and MIME Subtype x-koan and File
extensions skp, skd, skt, skm.
3. Under Action, select Launch Application and add SSEYO
Koan Web which you will have installed earlier.
For other Web Browsers :
Refer to the on-line help that came with your Web Browser.
=============================================================================
EMU8710 Music Card
=============================================================================
The latest 32-bit Koan software (where the SKME is of version 2.04 or later)
now includes seamless support for the EMU8710 Music Card !
This includes FULL SoundFont support (.SF2 files) !
To use the features of this card, simply treat your Koan software just as
though you were using a Creative Labs AWE64/32/SB64/SB32 soundcard.
=============================================================================
16 bit/32 bit versions
=============================================================================
The 32 bit versions of Koan Web and Koan Plugin support a multi-threaded
composer, which can be enabled through the Setup Dialog
(View Setup off the menu). This option enables Koan to keep on
composing, even when the graphical user interface is fully engaged by
the user. Previously, if the user interface were stopped while waiting
for user input, the music could stop being played after the Composer
Reaction time (View Setup) had elapsed.
Note that when using the multithreading option, you might experience some lack
of smoothness in the played music, when you have a small amount of physical
memory available (e.g. less than 16 Megabytes of base physical memory, and /
or many applications loaded). If this is the case, simply either increase the
Composer reaction time from the default value of 1000 milliseconds (see the
SSEYO Koan Web on-line help), or disable the multithreading option.
Note that the multi-threaded composer is enabled automatically for the
new SSEYO Koan Music Plug-in V3 for Netscape V3, and may not be disabled
in that case.
The 32 bit versions are designed for use only with Windows 95 or later.
The 32-bit Plugin for Netscape V2 may also be used with Microsoft Internet
Explorer V3.
The album editor supplied with Koan Web Platinum, currently has problems
with the Long File Names introducd by Windows 95 / Windows NT 4. To get around
this problem, simply edit your albums such that the album / pieces all have
filenames that are 8.3 characters or less (e.g. SAFENAME.SKA), and in
directories where each component of the path is 8.3 characters or less
(e.g. C:\SAFEPATH\STILLAOK\SAFENAME.SKA). Ths use of a path like
"c:\This is too long\And so is this.SKA) is not possible in the current
version.
=============================================================================
World Wide Web
=============================================================================
Don't forget you can use SSEYO Koan Web or the SSEYO Koan Music Plugin
for Netscape Navigator V2 or later to play back Koan pieces. Koan Web is
also suitable for use as as helper applications for WWW browsers such as
Microsoft Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator or Mosaic. Create your own
pieces with SSEYO Koan Pro for use on the web. See our web page for more
details (http://www.sseyo.com).
=============================================================================
Creative Labs AWE64 / SB64 / AWE32 / SB32 owners :
=============================================================================
If you have the 32-bit version of one of the SSEYO Koan products,
and you use a Creative Labs AWE32 card and wish to use SoundFont banks
from within Koan ... then the standard Creative Labs file AWEMAN32.DLL
must exist somewhere in your system path. Note that this was not the
case with very early Windows 95 AWE32 drivers from Creative Labs.
If this file is not present on your machine, then contact Creative
Labs for the latest driver pack (http://www.creaf.com).
Please also see the FAQ on the SSEYO Web site (http://www.sseyo.com)
Please note that at time of press, we have been advised by Creative Labs
that SoundFonts are *not* supported by the current Creative driver pack for
NT 4. Please contact Creative Labs for the latest word on whether or not
they have a set of drivers that supports the use of AWEMAN.DLL (for 16-bit
applications) or AWEMAN32.DLL (for 32-bit applications) under NT 4.
=============================================================================
GRAVIS ULTRASOUND (and possibly other patch caching cards):
=============================================================================
Reverb and Chorus are not supported by the Gravis card.
=============================================================================

Brian Eno's "Generative Music 1", a SSEYO Koan music title
=============================================================================
SSEYO has recently released this major SSEYO Koan music title, created by Brian
Eno with SSEYO Koan Pro.
"The works I have made with Koan symbolise the beginning of a new era of
music. There are now three musical alternatives: live music, recorded music
and generative music. Generative music enjoys some of the benefits of both
its ancestors. Like live music it is always different. Like recorded music it
is free of time-and-place limitations - you can hear it when and where you
want. I really think it is possible that our grandchildren will look at us in
wonder and say: 'you mean you used to listen to exactly the same thing over
and over again?' ". (Brian Eno 1996)
Brian Eno is the 1996 BRITs Producer of the Year for Outside by David Bowie,
and pioneer of ambient music. Brian Eno's Generative Music 1 was produced
with SSEYO Koan Pro.
It includes 12 Brian Eno Koan files with SSEYO Koan Plus V1.2 (Win 95/ 3.1
versions) on floppy disk. Requires Creative Labs SB32/AWE32 soundcard.
See our website for more details!
